Online Shoppers Relying Heavily on Product Recommendations, Click to Chat to Complete Transactions

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - December 20, 2010 ATG (Art Technology Group, Inc., NASDAQ: ARTG), the premier provider of cross-channel commerce solutions today announced that a number of its retail customers are reporting year-over-year online holiday sales growth nearing - or well over - 50 percent, via the increased use of online tools such as automated product recommendations and Click to Chat.

On average, ATG estimates that its retail clients are experiencing 15 percent growth in web sales this year over last, but several companies have seen even greater increases in online sales. For example, one clothing retailer investing in a number of social and mobile initiatives is experiencing a year-over-year 804 percent increase in its online revenue. Another ATG Hosting customer, a soft goods retailer, saw its November sales grow by 180 percent year-over-year. Others, such as a women's clothing manufacturer and retailer, experienced 49 percent growth in November.

This news comes on that consumers have spent 11.5 percent more online this year, totaling nearly $22 billion since
November 1.

"The November sales activity speaks to the opportunity for web retailers to focus on a comprehensive, cross-channel strategy throughout the 'Cyber Season' - not just black Friday and Cyber Monday, especially as the busiest online commerce days of the year actually occur in mid-December," said Nina McIntyre, ATG's senior vice president of marketing and chief marketing officer. "Consumers are adapting quickly to new online commerce services. We've seen the use of tools like Recommendations and Click to Chat surge this year, meaning that consumers now rely on - and expect - that added level of service."

Highlighted data for the use of ATG Click to Chat and ATG Recommendations is as follows:

  • On Cyber Monday, the year-over-year growth for the use of Click to Chat was 49 percent; Black Friday use was up by 71 percent
  • Click to Chat sessions for November 2010 increased by 61 percent over November 2009
  • Click to Chat sessions for the entire week of Cyber Monday (November 28 through December 4) grew by 47 percent, as opposed to that same week last year
  • Total ATG Recommendations in November 2010 versus November 2009 jumped by 264 percent
  • Cyber Monday Recommendations use was up by 237 percent

McIntyre said she finds the spike in ATG Recommendations usage particularly interesting because, while some might think it's the younger, more web-savvy generations who are using Recommendations to make purchases, results of ATG's recent ' study would suggest otherwise. The findings of that study, which surveyed more than 1,000 consumers, stated that consumers who are 55 and over rely on Recommendations most frequently.
